A Maine Army National Guard crew flying a Black Hawk helicopter rescued a 43-year-old woman who broke her ankle Wednesday while hiking in Baxter State Park.
The woman was on Katahdin’s Knife Edge when the accident happened, but she and others who were with her were able to move down the mountain below the cloud cover, according to a national guard press release.
The guard got the call for help about 4:40 p.m. and assembled a crew in less than an hour.
The guardsmen used a cable hoist to bring the woman to the helicopter and she was taken to Millinocket Municipal Airport where an ambulance awaited her arrival.
“We’re glad to have been part of this success story, working alongside Baxter staff and local first responders,” Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham said. “On top of our federal mission, it’s our privilege to be able to support our neighbors and communities.”
Kevin Adam, director of Baxter State Park, said for rescues like this, it’s critical to have federal help to ensure “timely extraction from a high mountain wilderness environment.”
