Schools are back in session, and that means motorists need to be cautious when approaching school buses, law enforcement officials say.
The warning comes after a crash between a box truck and a school bus in Raymond this morning caused by a distracted driver, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
No injuries were reported.
At about 6:25 a.m., a sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol came upon the scene of the accident on Route 302 between the Main Street and Webbs Mills Road intersections.
Police said a 2019 Chevrolet Box truck, owned by Floyd J. Brown Construction of Windham and driven by Lance Vigue, 39, of Gray, had struck a Raymond/Windham RSU14 school bus driven by Debra Duchaine, 66, of Raymond.
“The operator of the box truck was distracted by an object that had fallen in the cab of the truck and did not see the school bus stopped,” police said in a statement.
Police said Duchaine was in the process of loading one student. The bus was stopped with its flashing lights on and the stop arm deployed. There were nine other high school-aged students already on board.
No one was hurt in the accident, police said. The bus's stop arm was damaged, and the box truck received minor damage.
Vigue was charged with passing a stopped school bus and driving to endanger. He is scheduled to appear in a Portland court on Oct. 17.
The Sheriff’s department reminded drivers to be vigilant and stop for stopped school buses. It stated that it is “conducting many traffic details in school zones for speeding and passing school bus violations in response to increased reports of violations.”
“Fortunately, in this incident, the bus driver had control of the student boarding and other than minor damage, the situation was resolved without injury,” the department said in a statement. “That has not been the case in recent months in similar circumstances.”
