A Florida woman killed her 10-year-old son over the weekend, along with her daughter and herself, after a Florida judge ordered her to turn her son over to her ex-husband, who lives in Maine.

Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office went to a mobile home in the Waverly Area of Lake Falls, Fla., a community less than 50 miles south of Orlando, at about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27.

There, they found the bodies of Aiden Hutchins, 10, and his mother, Brandy Hutchins, and Hutchins’ 19-year-old daughter whose name was not released, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Judd told reporters in a press conference Sunday that Aiden Hutchins was the subject of a custody battle between his mother and Nick Hutchins, her ex-husband, who now lives in Maine.

Last week, Judd said, Nick Hutchins appeared in a Florida court, where a judge awarded him custody of his son. Brandy Hutchins was ordered to turn the child over to the sheriff’s office by 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25.

“Well, Friday afternoon at 6 o’clock came and went, and the child was not turned over pursuant to the judge’s order,” Judd said.

Detectives worked through the weekend to find the boy, Judd said, and acted on a tip on Sunday that he and his mother were at the residence where their bodies were found.

“I can’t imagine a more horrific set of circumstances,” Judd said. “My heart breaks for all of the family. We’re devastated for this beautiful 10-year-old child, all because mom did not want to turn the child over to the rightful father pursuant to the court order.”

A GoFundMe page set up by a friend of Aidan’s father, Nick Hutchins, to raise money for Hutchins’ legal fees said family members, police and the court system “dropped the ball.”

Judd, in the press conference Sunday, said there was no way to know how Brandy Hutchins would react to the judge’s ruling, noting she had no criminal history.

“There was absolutely zero evidence in the court order or testimony that there was any violence, or threat of violence or a danger,” he said.

Judd said Brandy Hutchins’ 19-year-old daughter and Aiden Hutchins had different fathers. Judd disclosed few details about the daughter’s death but said, “There’s a lot of investigation to still occur.”
