Initial inspections of the ferry that ran aground off Vinalhaven Wednesday revealed damaged propellors, one bent rudder and another rudder missing, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The inspection results, announced Thursday, found “the hull was not significantly damaged” in the incident, according to a statement from the department.

The vessel, the Captain Richard G. Spear, was leaving the dock on Vinalhaven just after 10:30 a.m. Aug. 16 when it struck a ledge. None of the 65 passengers or five crew members aboard were hurt.

The Maine State Ferry Service did not identify the captain of the vessel on that day other than as “a long-time MSFS team member who has experience making the run between Rockland and Vinalhaven.”

It may be possible, according to the department, for divers to recover the missing rudder. The service was unable to provide estimates for the cost of repairs or when the Spear could return to service. The accident remains under investigation.

The Captain E. Frank Thompson and the Captain Charles Philbrook will do scheduled ferry runs between Rockland and Vinalhaven while the Spear is being repaired.
