A Massachusetts woman has been indicted in connection with a December 2022 vehicle crash in Castine that killed four Maine Maritime Academy students.

Noelle Tavares, 20, of North Falmouth, Massachusetts, was indicted by a Hancock County Grand Jury on Friday. According to the indictment, Tavares now faces four counts of manslaughter, along with four counts of aggravated operating under the influence of alcohol, two counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, two counts of driving to endanger and one count of reckless speed.

Tavares was a passenger in a 2003 Range Rover, along with six other occupants, that crashed into a tree on Shore Road in an early-morning crash in December 2022, according to the Associated Press. Four of the other passengers, all students at Maine Maritime Academy, died in the fiery crash.

Although Tavares was not driving, the indictment indicated she was facing the charges “as an accomplice and/or co-conspirator.”
