Researchers at the University of Maine want residents to fill out a survey as part of a study on ways to control pesky browntail moths.

The anonymous survey, which takes 15-20 minutes to complete, will help researchers understand how Mainers view measures to control the moths, according to a university press release.

“The study may ultimately inform widespread response to this growing threat to people and plants,” according to the release.

In their caterpillar phase, the moths shed hairs that can cause lung and skin irritation. They also defoliate trees, which can eventually damage the trees enough to kill them according to UMaine's Cooperative Extension.

The online survey is available until Aug. 4. Those who complete it may enter a raffle to win one of 10 LL Bean gift cards valued at $75.
