A Berwick man was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed another man in an exchange of gunfire in May, the Maine Attorney General’s Office concluded.

Police responded to School Street in Berwick about 9 a.m. May 13 and found two men suffering gunshot wounds in the bedroom of the home, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Edward Badeau, 41, of Berwick, had come to the home that morning, fired a handgun into the air multiple times and then forced his way into the home of Christopher Utt, 25, police said.

After Badeau entered the house, he and Utt exchanged gunfire just outside Utt’s bedroom.

When police and ambulance crews arrived, they took Utt to Portsmouth Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. Badeau when to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in New Hampshire, where he later died of his injuries.

The AG’s office determined that Utt shot Badeau in self-defense, so there will be no charges brought in the case. Utt is still recovering from his injuries, according to police.
