Two Westbrook residents were shot to death Monday night as their two children watched from inside a vehicle on Main Street, police said.

Brittney Cockrell, 37, and Michael Hayter, 41, were allegedly killed by Marcel Lagrange Jr., 24, of South Portland. There is no known connection at this time between the two who were killed and the alleged shooter, according to Maine State Police.

Cockrell and Hayter's children, a 7-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, witnessed the shooting, police said.

Hayter was found dead inside the vehicle while Cockrell was outside it.

Westbrook police were called to the 800 block of Main Street around 8:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they saw a man shooting a female near a vehicle in the parking lot off Bridge Street. They chased him down Main Street toward Armory Apartments.

The gunman allegedly assaulted a bystander during the pursuit, but was then tackled and disarmed by several other bystanders. Fred Roukey, 75, of Westbrook, was injured and sustained minor injuries, police said.

Lagrange has been charged with two counts of murder and is being held at Cumberland County Jail without bail.
