The Portland school board voted unanimously Tuesday to hire a new superintendent.

Ryan Scallon will start July 1 as leader of Portland Public Schools, the system announced.

“Ryan is a deep listener, collaborative in nature, humble, and the bulk of his career has been in schools where the majority of students have been historically excluded,” board chair Sarah Lentz said in a statement. “In addition to having experience as a teacher, principal, and an administrator, Ryan is also a parent and brings all of these perspectives to the role.”

Scallon, who holds a doctorate degree in education, is currently an assistant superintendent in the School District of Philadelphia.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be provided this opportunity,” Scallon said. “I plan to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

In Portland, his annual salary will be $200,000, according to the district.

He replaces Xavier Botana, who resigned in December following controversy over a payroll system that failed to pay employees on time.

The Portland public school system is the largest and most diverse in the state, with about 6,500 students. About one-third of those students come from homes where languages other than English are spoken, according to the system.
