A 60-year-old Millinocket man was killed Tuesday when he was hit by a logging truck on Grand Lake Road in northern Penobscot County, according to the Maine Warden Service.

John Michaud was driving his snowmobile north on a snowmobile trail about 12:30 p.m. when he failed to stop at a crossing and was struck by an empty log trailer that was headed west.

Truck driver Ronald Campbell III, 51, of Patten, tried to stop on the ice-covered road but could not avoid the collision, the warden service said in a press release.

Michaud died at the scene and was wearing a helmet.

Wardens continue to investigate the crash.

“Riders should always come to a complete stop before entering any roadway, and always look for oncoming vehicles,” Game Warden Lt. Tom Ward said in a statement. “High snowbanks and trees can often obscure an operator’s vision, so it’s important to look and be certain before crossing any roadway.”
