A Maine State Police trooper on Saturday found a dog that had been missing for four days following a crash on I-95 in Ogunquit.
After receiving calls from two drivers who thought they spotted Whiskey, a hunting dog, Trooper Matthew Williams searched the woods near the interstate in York with a flashlight around 8 p.m., according to Maine State Police. He saw “a couple eyes shining back at him from the woods” and headed back to his cruiser to get some food.
“I brought a piece of chicken down with me to win his trust and give him the energy necessary to get him back up the embankment,” Williams said in a statement. “He then finished off my dinner, two chicken breasts and a cheese stick and drank nearly 2 liters of water.”
Whiskey was one of 11 dogs being transported in a steel cage in a pickup truck that crashed on the interstate around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Ogunquit. One dog died, the others were found and Whiskey was missing until Saturday.
The driver of the pickup truck, William Funkhouser, 38, of West Virginia, was unhurt in the crash, but his passenger, Jonah Hose, 23, also of West Virginia, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a New Hampshire hospital, according to police.
Police said the dogs were being transported properly and that they don’t anticipate filing any charges related to the accident.
