A Sanford man was arrested Thursday on a drug trafficking charge after his vehicle was stopped, according to police.
Sanford Police, together with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, arrested Andrew Hanson, 36, of Sanford, on a charge of class A aggravated trafficking in schedule W drugs. A passenger in the vehicle, Julia Rea, 20, of Biddeford, was also arrested on a warrant. Police said there may be additional charges against Hanson.
In announcing the arrest, police said they had been investigating the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl throughout the Sanford area, and alleged that Hanson had been making trips out of state to bring the drugs into York County.
“(On Thursday) agents determined that Hanson was making a trip out of state and likely returning with drugs. After locating his vehicle entering from New Hampshire, agents followed Hanson to the town of Sanford where he was stopped by Sanford police officers,” police said in a statement.
Police said a drug-sniffing dog located about two pounds of what is believed to be fentanyl, along with 165 grams of methamphetamine, $1,700 in cash and a fake handgun. Police estimated the street value of the drugs at more than $155,000.
Police said the charge was aggravated due to the weight of the drugs. Hanson’s bail has been set at $25,000.
