The June primary field is set with only one contest among the top-tier races.
Former U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-2nd District, will face Caratunk Selectwoman Liz Caruso in a Republican primary in June. The winner will face incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Jared Golden in November.
In the governor’s race, no one filed the signatures required to challenge either incumbent Democrat Gov. Janet Mills or former Republican Gov. Paul LePage. And in the 1st Congressional District, the race for November is set between incumbent U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, and challenger Ed Thelander, a Republican.
Both parties touted their success in fielding full slates of candidates for the Maine Senate, with all 35 races set to be contested in November. Before then, there will be six primary races in June.
On the Republican side, Grace Tibbetts of Lincoln will face Eric Rojo of Lincoln in Senate District 8; Robert Cross of Dedham will face Peter Lyford of Eddington in Senate District 10; Mark Andre of Oakland, Kevin Kitchin of Fairfield and Michael Perkins of Oakland will compete for the Senate District 16 nomination.
On the Democratic side, Abraham Furth of Old Town will face Michael Tipping of Orono in Senate District 8; David Levesque of Newcastle will face Cameron Reny of Bristol in Senate District 13 and Kenneth Capron of Portland will face Jill Duson of Portland in Senate District 27.
The Senate is currently controlled by Democrats, who hold a 21-13 advantage with one vacant seat.
“Maine people want representatives in Augusta who understand the challenges they face, know their community, and are committed to not just fighting for the things they value but delivering on property tax, prescription drug and energy relief,” said Senate President Troy Jackson (D-Allagash) in a statement released by the Senate Democratic Campaign Committee.
A day earlier, Maine Republican Party Chairwoman Demi Kouzounas said they are seeing a lot of energy in advance of the election because Maine people want change.
“Fielding great candidates in every Senate district is a strong indication of the amount of momentum behind grassroots Republicans,” she said. “These wonderful candidates have stepped up and are ready to do a much better job serving Maine than the current Democrat majority is doing.”
