The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped again on Wednesday as Maine continues to see a decline in the number of people needing hospital-level care, according to data from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
There are 131 people hospitalized with the virus, down from 143 the previous day. That’s the fewest people hospitalized since August.
Of the 131 currently hospitalized, 29 are in intensive care and 10 are on ventilators.
The state reported only two new cases of the virus on Tuesday and no new deaths. The state is now caught up on case reviews after a 60,000-case backlog accumulated earlier this year, Maine CDC spokesman Robert Long told the Portland Press Herald.
For weeks, CDC officials have cautioned that hospitalizations, deaths and wastewater sample results are a more accurate way to track the spread of the disease. That was partly because of the backlog, but also because more people are testing at home and not reporting results to the state.
Since the pandemic began in Maine, there have been 231,287 cases, with 167,484 confirmed and 63,803 listed as probable. There have been 2,138 deaths.
