Make the most out of your time off with these 10 events:

Friday

Cabin Fever Showcase & Jam
9 p.m. at the Penobscot Pour House in Bangor
Shrug off the winter blues and get out of the house for a night of live music. Described as an event that will “get your blood pumping and warm your soul at the same time,” this showcase features two nights of live entertainment with amateur and professional performances. Know how to play the guitar? Plug in and hit the stage to show Bangor what you’ve got. Can’t hold a tune? That’s ok. Enjoy performances by River Bottom Funk and the Penobscot Pour House band, Dakota. This event is 21+ and there is a $5 cover charge at the door. All proceeds will be donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Maine. For directions, click here

The County Snow Fest 
Jan. 28-30 at the office of Aroostook County Tourism in Presque Isle
Enjoy three days of indoor and outdoor activities during The County Snow Fest, which features events like a casino night, live music, a bonfire and fireworks. Bring your sled and enjoy over 2,300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. For event information and directions, click here.

Saturday

Downeast Day on the Ice
8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Vining Lake Community Preserve
Do you like ice fishing? How about ice skating? Snowshoeing? Cross-country skiing? If you answered yes to any one of those, the Downeast Day on the Ice is for you. From horse-drawn carriage rides to a naturalist demonstration and a winter hike led by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife – there’s something for the whole family to enjoy at this free community event. The Wood Brothers
8 p.m. at the State Theater in Portland
Get groovy this weekend as the State Theater welcomes The Wood Brothers. With a  combination of folk, gospel, blues and jazz, the band’s sound is sure to put you in a good mood. Tickets for the concert can be purchased online or at the box office. Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of the event is required to attend. All patrons must wear a mask while not actively eating or drinking.

L.L. Bean - Free Guided Cross-Country Skiing Outing
8-9 a.m. at the L.L. Bean Fogg Farm in Freeport
Breathe in the crisp winter air as you glide through the groomed trails at Fogg Farm in Freeport. This free guided outing is perfect for those wanting an opportunity to get outside or for those looking to meet people in the community. Register in advance online, grab your ski gear and get ready to make some tracks! 

Second Annual Community Snow Day
10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Greater Lovell Land Trust in Lovell
Sled, snowshoe, skate or ski your afternoon away at the Greater Lovell Land Trust during its community snow day. Make sure to bring your equipment and a sense of adventure and imagination – as you may run into a gnome or two on the trail. After you’re done participating in the gnome hunt, enjoy hot cocoa or tea. For more information and directions to the land trust, click here.

Sunday

Barre and Breakfast
8:30-9:30 a.m. at The Daily Sweat in Kennebunk 
Looking for some inspiration for your next meal? Maybe you want a new recipe to add to your repertoire? Participate in a workshop hosted by The Daily Sweat and learn meal prep tips, new recipes and breakfast ideas that nourish your body from the inside, out. After the lesson, enjoy a barre class that is sure to make you break a sweat. The cost of registration is $30 and can be purchased on the studio’s website

7th Annual Fat-Tire Bike Loppet 
All-day at the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center 
Throw your fat-tire bike in the car and head to Rangeley to take advantage of the beautiful terrain. From wide straightaways to gradual hills, Rangeley Lakes Trail Center is a winter wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. Rides during the 7th annual fat-tire bike loppet include a 10- and 20-mile groomed Nordic ride, a 10-and 20-mile single-track mix and a 10-mile Nordic untimed tour. Courses may change due to snow conditions, visit the center’s website for the latest information and the full schedule of events. 

Vertical Challenge 
7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Black Mountain in Rumford 
Spend the afternoon at Black Mountain for a day of snowy activities that are fun for all ages. Held at ski resorts across the northeast, the Vertical Challenge is a series of casual ski and snowboard races. Whether you want to participate or be a spectator, the choice is yours. Registration is free with your purchase of a lift ticket (unless you are a season pass holder). Complete the registration form here. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to participate.  

Scarborough Frozen 5K 
1-2 p.m. at 11 Municipal Drive in Scarborough
I will say if this event piques your interest, you’re hardcore. Lace-up your sneakers and bundle up (seriously, wear layers – it’s going to be cold) for this 5K road race through Scarborough. It’s $20 to register in advance or $25 on race day. All proceeds support the Scarborough High School track and cross country boosters. For registration and race details, click here.
