State parks set an all-time record for attendance in 2021, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry announced Thursday.

Attendance was up 8% over the previous all-time record set in 2020. That means more than 3.3 million visitors headed to the state’s 12 state park campgrounds and 48 parks and historic sites.

“It is great to see more people than ever enjoying our trails, campgrounds, beaches and ponds,” Commissioner Amanda Beal said in a press release. “Our beautiful state parks are go-to destinations for Maine residents and visitors as they look to find accessible and welcoming outdoor recreation opportunities.”

Statistics from the department show in three of the last four years, a record-breaking number of people have visited the campgrounds, parks and historic sites. For those looking forward to camping this year, the Maine State Park reservation system opens Feb. 1 for Sebago Lake State Park and Feb. 4 for all state park campgrounds.

“Many of us have realized that the safest, healthiest and most enjoyable place to be in the pandemic is outside,” said Bureau of Parks and Lands Director Andy Cutko. “In 2021, we welcomed back many out-of-staters who didn’t visit Maine in 2020, and we saw continued strong visitation from Mainers of all ages.”
