Political newcomer Carl Sheline beat out challenger Donna Gillespie to become Lewiston’s next mayor, according to results posted Tuesday night.
The city clerk’s office reported that Sheline secured 4,418 votes, while Gillespie got 2,957. Both were vying for the mayor’s office after Mark Cayer announced earlier this year that he was not seeking re-election.
Sheline, 42, grew up in Arizona but has lived in Lewiston for the past 10 years with his two children, ages 19 and 14. He is a co-manager at Lewiston-based Munka Coworking, a company that maintains a co-working space for remote workers. He ran on a platform of image-building and economic development. He has never held political office before.
Gillespie, a retired case worker for the state Department of Health and Human Services, is a native of Cambridge, Mass., but has called Lewiston home for 30 years. She ran hoping to help the city offer more services to the homeless and those suffering from substance use disorder.
