The city of Augusta announced earlier this week that it’s appointing Susan Robertson as its new city manager, marking the first time a woman has held the job.

Robertson has worked for the city since 2019, first as assistant city manager and human resources director. She has been serving as acting city manager since Bill Bridgeo retired from the position on Sept. 10 after holding the post for 23 years.

“I feel very honored to be asked to serve as the city manager in this great capital city,” Robertson said in a statement. “I recognize the importance of being the first female city manager and carrying on the tradition of excellent leadership. I am looking forward to working with the mayor, city council and city staff to continue the positive momentum in Augusta.”

Before coming to Augusta, Robertson worked as city administrator for more than six years in Sun Valley, Idaho. Before that, she was the village manager in Fox Point, Wis., for more than 17 years. She also served as assistant city manager in Laramie, Wyo., and Canandaigua, N.Y.

Robertson holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an active member of the Maine Town and City Managers Association (MTCMA) and International City/County Management Association (ICMA).

City officials said in a release that they chose Robertson after a nationwide search.

“Ultimately, we knew Susan’s extensive 36-year career in municipal government and commitment to this community was the fit we were looking for. She is extremely qualified and we are excited she has accepted our offer,” said Mayor David Rollins.
