The Maine Service Employees Association Local 1989 ratified a new two-year labor agreement with the state Thursday night, according to the office of Gov. Janet Mills.

The vote of approval follows a separate agreement with state workers covered by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Between the two contracts, 9,000 state workers have new contracts.

The agreements, which cover 2021-2023, include 2% pay raises in December; 4% raises in July 2022; a one-time $2,000 payment to employees this December; increasing base pay to $15 an hour and extending paid parental leave from two weeks to four weeks, according to the Mills administration.

“My administration believes deeply in the value of public service and in promoting public sector work as a meaningful career, and we will continue to support State of Maine employees moving forward,” Mills said in a statement.

The state budget and other appropriations will cover the costs of the agreements without raising taxes, according to the administration.
