The state reported 738 new cases of COVID-19 and two additional deaths on Friday, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The sustained high number of positive cases comes as Maine continues to feel the effects of the delta variant. In schools, there have been 2,578 cases in the last 30 days, with the state investigating outbreaks at 108 schools, according to the Maine Department of Education.

On Thursday, Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah tweeted that there were two children hospitalized with COVID. During the pandemic, there have been “at least 34” children hospitalized with the virus, he said.

Throughout the state, 476 schools are taking part in a pooled-testing program to help identify positive cases quickly and limit infections, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

The state is also expanding testing options in childcare facilities and has added testing capabilities at Walgreens pharmacies.

“While the way out of the pandemic is vaccination, getting tested for COVID-19 remains critical to limiting the spread of the deadly virus,” DHHS Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew said in a statement.

On Thursday, there were 226 people hospitalized with COVID, 71 in critical care and 28 on a ventilator. Statewide, there are 36 available critical care beds.

Friday’s numbers bring the total number of cases in Maine since the pandemic began to 90,727, with 64,782 confirmed cases and 25,945 probable cases. Deaths stand at 1,024.
