A senior at Lake Region High School in Naples died over the weekend due to a “medical emergency” that occurred during a school-sponsored hiking trip to New Hampshire, according to SAD61 superintendent Al Smith.
Smith declined to specify the medical emergency, or to identify the student, but confirmed that the death, which occurred on Sunday, was due to a medical problem, and not an accident of any kind.
“It’s tragic, horrible,” Smith said.
The student was with a group of fellow seniors hiking on Baldface Mountain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The trip is part of a voluntary annual excursion for seniors that Smith said has been held for at least the past 15 years. To date, he said, there has never been an incident of this kind on any of the previous trips.
Smith said staff are on hand this week at the school to offer support to students and faculty.
“We have many, many counselors in place,” he said.
