LEWISTON – The city of Lewiston will soon be unveiling a 10-foot statue honoring Muhammad Ali’s May 25, 1965, fight against Sonny Liston.
The statue will be on Main Street, just a few miles where Ali fought at St. Dominic’s Arena, now known as the Coliseé.
The statue will depict the iconic photo of Ali knocking Liston out in the first round of their heavyweight championship rematch, said sculptor Zenos Frudakis.
Frudakis said he’s honored to be the sculptor behind recreating one of the most iconic moments in sports history.
“He’s an icon and I feel like I’m recreating an iconic figure, a moment of history,” said Frudakis.
The statue will give recognition to Ali’s unique fighting style, said Frudakis.
The sculptor spoke about what it means to work on a statue of someone he idolized.
“Ali meant so much to me growing up,” said Frudakis. “I grew up a big Muhammad Ali fan, and when I got the call to do this, I was excited. Ali is someone important to us culturally, and I hope this statue will connect with those who feel like me.”
The statue is on track to be unveiled on May 25, marking the 60th anniversary of the moment of the Liston fight.
