FALMOUTH – Members of Portland’s Salvation Army are ringing bells outside Walmart in Falmouth as part of its annual 24-hour Red Kettle Challenge.
Members of the Salvation Army will be outside until 2 p.m. Tuesday
Funds raised during this time are going to the organization’s Human Services program to assist with issues like food insecurity and housing costs.
According to Maj. Keith Jache, the Salvation Army is looking to raise $150,000. He says over the last 29 days, they’ve raised over $100,000 from kettles across Portland.
“You think of $150,000. You think it’s a lot of money,” said Jache. “But because of the generosity and the people who just care about other people, we’re going to reach that goal because of their help.”
Jache says this is the first time the organization has done its Red Kettle Challenge at Walmart in Falmouth but has seen the generosity of the local community. He said that his first donation of the morning was $100 from a gentleman who wanted to help the organization with its mission.
“People like that, it shows people’s generosity, even with Christmas approaching,” said Jache. “We’re blessed to have people who have big hearts to come out and support us.”
Anyone interested in donating to the challenge can do so either in-person or online at the Salvation Army’s website.
