With about a month to go before the start of flu season in Maine, state data shows relatively low case counts at the end of the summer.

Data released today from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows a total of 13 cases statewide throughout the month of August.

Flu season in Maine typically runs from October through May. According to Maine CDC data, the number of flu cases remained low throughout June, July and August, after dropping off in May.

Despite a quiet summer, officials as far back as May were cautioning Mainers to employ typical measures such as washing hands and staying home if they feel sick.

Anna Kruger, epidemiologist with Maine CDC, cautioned in May that residents should keep up with immunizations against flu, COVID-19 and if necessary other respiratory ailments such as respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

“It’s important for us to remember going into next fall that we’ll need to get vaccinated again for the upcoming season,” she said in May.
