Cumberland resident Julia Gagnon has made it into the top 10 contestants on the current season of the national television talent show “American Idol.”

On Monday night’s broadcast, Gagnon, 21, of Cumberland, a student at the University of Southern Maine, learned she made the cut live on stage.

Earlier in the broadcast, Gagnon performed Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange” to a cheering crowd and praise from judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

“Thank you for showing us all of your tricks and things and really doing your interpretation of a really delicate song, and then adding those big moments at the right time,” Bryan told Gagnon when she’d finished. “It was well done.”

Gagnon had already advanced to the top 12 at the end of Sunday night’s show, where she performed Whitney Houston’s “Run to You.”

On Monday, the dozen contestants listened as host Ryan Seacrest announced the Top 10 performers one by one. Gagnon’s name came last, prompting a stunned expression on her face as the program ended.

Gagnon will join her fellow contestants on the show next weekend.
