Inquiries among local officials in Wells offered little insight about a 19-year-old local man who allegedly attacked police in New York City just blocks from Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
Wells Police Chief Jo-Ann Putnam wouldn’t say whether Trevor Bickford, 19, or his family were known to police.
Putnam said that her officers had been in contact with the FBI over the weekend, and declined further comment until the FBI made a statement, citing the ongoing federal investigation.
Several vehicles were parked outside the Bickford family home on Main Street Tuesday morning. No one came to the door, and signs were attached to wooden stakes on the front lawn warning off trespassers.
Yearbooks from Wells High School noted Bickford as a member of the Class of 2022, but inquiries at the school were referred to the principal and vice principal who were not available for comment.
Wells is a small coastal town in southern York County, Maine, with a population just over 9,500. It is less than a 30-minute drive from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to the south, and less than 40 minutes from Portland to the north.
The bulk of its economy comes from summertime tourism, with restaurants, hotels, ice cream stands and attractions such as mini-golf clustered along Route 1, which connects it to its neighbors.
Police said Bickford attacked a group of officers at 10:11 p.m. Saturday on the corner of West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue. Three officers went to the hospital, one with a fractured skull, according to New York CIty Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell, but all three were in stable condition Saturday.
Bickford, who was shot in the shoulder by police during the incident, faces multiple charges of assault and attempted murder.
Several media outlets reported that Bickford, who is awaiting arraignment, may have been motivated by Islamic extremism.
