LAS VEGAS — Amy Atwell hit the second-most three-pointers in a game in Hawaii women’s basketball history, but it was not enough to carry the Rainbow Wahine in a 70-63 loss at UNLV on Tuesday.

After a hot start that it could not sustain, UH fell to 3-6 to conclude its pre-conference schedule, including 0-3 on the Mainland.

What You Need To Know

  • Amy Atwell scored her second-most points of the season, 28, and hit seven three-pointers in Hawaii's 70-63 road loss to UNLV

  • She was one three-pointer shy of tying Julissa Tago's single-game program record of eight threes

  • UH used the 3-ball to lead in the early going and was still ahead by six points in the third quarter before UNLV surged ahead

  • The Rainbow Wahine concluded their nonconference schedule at 3-6 and begin Big West play on Dec. 30

Atwell scored 28 points on 8-for-15 shooting, including 7-for-13 from long range to fall one trey short of matching former teammate Julissa Tago’s eight 3s against UC Irvine on Feb. 27, 2020. The sharpshooting senior from Australia tried to rally her team late, hitting a pair of difficult threes in the final 21 seconds to get the Wahine within four. But UNLV put the game away at the free-throw line.

While the Rebels (8-3) of the Mountain West Conference went just 1-for-16 from three, they enjoyed a huge advantage inside, outscoring UH 36-12 in points in the paint.

UH led its former Big West rival in the early going and even 36-30 in the third quarter, but the Lady Rebels surged when Atwell picked up her third foul of the game and took a seat on the bench.

Atwell, who moved into sole possession of second place in UH’s career threes list with 153, was UH’s only player in double-figure scoring. She needs 15 more threes to surpass Megan Tinnin and become the new record-holder.

Desi-Rae Young led UNLV with 20 points.

The Wahine will disperse over the Christmas holiday and plan to reconvene for the start of Big West play at UC Riverside on Dec. 30.
