SHREWSBURY, Mass. - The Thursday morning commute saw a big change over, from snow, to sleet, to rain.

Crews in Central Massachusetts were busy clearing off roads and most school districts had a two-hour delay.

In Shrewsbury, department of public works crews pretreated the nearly 105 miles of main roads with about 4,200 gallons of salt brine the night before.

Highway Division Manager Nick Repekta said the mix of elements can make clean up a bit challenging.

"The change over, snow to rain change over is probably one of the most difficult things” said Repekta. “Cold air never likes to push its way out. So, we usually see a prolonged, time frame of freezing rain. Ice is certainly more challenging than snow to manage. Uses a lot more salt, a lot more material. And obviously it's more challenging for the drivers on the road and in our trucks."

Repekta said they're now looking ahead to this weekend where we're expected to see more snow.

He said he'll make sure his crews get as much rest between the storms as they can.
