HONOLULU — Motorists driving on Kalakaua Avenue are advised of a road rehabilitation project from Olohana Street to Monsarrat Avenue and from Dillingham Fountain to Poni Moi Road, according to the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction.

Construction will begin June 15 with crews working on different areas at a time to reduce negative impacts on the public and traffic. The project will last about nine months, with work hours between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Work will be done to reconstruct asphalt roads, concrete curbs and gutters; adjust utility hole covers and utility boxes; and install vehicle detector loops.

The project contractor coordinates and facilitates local traffic for businesses and residents, including deliveries, trash collection and emergency services.

“No Parking” signs will be placed along the roadside one week before work is done to notify the public of upcoming construction. Drivers are asked to observe the posted dates and times on the signs; vehicles parked on streets with “No Parking” signs will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Project officials ask the public to anticipate detours and delays due to lane and road closures and allow for extra travel time in the area. Observe traffic controls, posted signs and special duty police officers.

The Department of Design and Construction notes that new asphalt is hot, black and tacky. Walking or driving through uncured pavement can result in serious burns or tracking marks on driveways and sidewalks. Because of this, the contractor may delay access through construction areas during work hours for the public’s safety.
