1. House Democrats condemn Mayorkas impeachment as 'hit job'

On the eve of House Republicans’ impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, House Democratic leadership condemned the move as a political stunt. Monday’s press conference comes one day after the Republican-led House Homeland Security Committee released draft articles of impeachment for Mayorkas, accusing him of "high crimes and misdemeanors" and intentionally disregarding immigration law.

“We don’t see the high crimes and misdemeanors standard being met,” Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., said during a livestreamed event with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other ranking members of the House Homeland Security Committee. “This is a highly focused effort led by Republicans who are just trying to drum up this notion that somehow the Republicans can ride into November.”

2. Gov. Greg Abbott says Texas ‘prepared’ if Biden federalizes National Guard

As tensions between Texas and the Biden administration continue over security at the southern border, some Democrats have called on President Joe Biden to federalize the state’s National Guard. That would place the Texas National Guard under the command of Biden rather than Abbott.

Those calls from Democrats came as Abbott continues to use the National Guard to prevent U.S. Border Patrol agents from accessing the 47-acre Shelby Park in Eagle Pass.

Appearing on conservative commentator Tucker Carlson’s “Uncensored” show, Abbott seemed doubtful that Biden would make the move, and referred to it as “boneheaded.” However, he said Texas is “prepared” if it comes to that.

3. Texas Tribune: National Democrats back Michelle Vallejo for 15th congressional district

U.S. House Democrats are rallying around Michelle Vallejo in her bid to unseat Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz in the 15th congressional district this year.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced Monday it will add Vallejo to the first cohort of its “Red to Blue” program, which selects promising candidates to support who are challenging Republican incumbents. Vallejo unsuccessfully ran for the seat in 2022.

“I am immensely proud to have been added to the DCCC’s first round of their coveted ‘Red to Blue' program,” Vallejo said in a statement. “South Texas deserves a champion that will fight for them every single day in Congress to lower costs for families, expand access to affordable and quality health care, protect Social Security and Medicare and defend reproductive freedom.”

Charlie Reed comes from a pretty athletic family, starting with his father, who played college soccer. Like his father, Reed has taken to stopping shots on a soccer field. Early on, it became pretty clear that he was good and others noticed. When the Austin FC began in Austin a few years back, they started the Austin FC Academy and Reed was picked to train with the group.
