North Carolina officials are attributing a fifth death to Hurricane Ian. A 24-year-old man died after his vehicle hydroplaned and crashed into a tree in Moore County, the Department of Public Safety said Tuesday.

Over the weekend, Gov. Roy Cooper said four people had died during the storm. Ian brought heavy wind and rain to the state late last week and took out power to more than 400,000.

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a powerful Category 4 storm, and state officials said the death toll there is at more than 100 as of Tuesday.

Four of five deaths in North Carolina involved traffic crashes. Three of the people who died were in Johnston County.

Here are the details from the Department of Public Safety on the deaths from Ian in North Carolina:

• A 24-year-old man died after his vehicle hydroplaned and hit a tree
• A 65-year-old man died and his wife was hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning in Johnston County from running a generator in a closed garage
• A 24-year-old woman died after her vehicle went off the road and hit a tree in Johnston County
• A 25-year-old man died after a vehicle he was in hydroplaned, lost control and crashed into another vehicle
• A 22-year-old man in Martin County when his vehicle went off the road and into a flooded canal

Ian tracked through North Carolina after making landfall for a second time as a Category 1 storm in South Carolina. The storm brought some minor storm surge, flooding to coastal communities in North Carolina and brought down trees and power lines across the eastern and central parts of the state.
