BEXAR COUNTY, Texas -- The standards for becoming a Bexar County Sheriff's Deputy just became more strict.

"We're going to be very discriminating on who we get into the agency, we don't just want anybody coming in," said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Recently, Sheriff Salazar requested revisions to the detention cadet job description. Those changes were approved on Monday by the civil service commission.

"Before we were letting people in if they had an arrest but not necessarily a conviction. I just think to avoid any problems, we tighten things down a bit," he said.

Under the new guidelines, if someone wants to apply, they cannot have any prior arrest records for driving while intoxicated or impaired.

"Statistically speaking, by the time somebody's been arrested for DWI one time, the statistics show that person's probably done it upwards of 80 times before they got caught," Salazar said.

Under the new guidelines a job applicant cannot have a history of assault, stalking, family violence, theft, crimes of moral turpitude, or sexual offenses. People also must not have had prior violations of the uniform code of military justice.

"We understand that it may take us a little bit longer to fill our man-power, but then again I'd rather work with some people short than have the wrong kind of people in the agency," said Salazar.

Some of the employees arrested were hired before Salazar came into office. From here he said this is a way to have a fresh start.

"Quite frankly some of them had what I would consider to be red flags in their files before they were hired on even then. We're changing things so that some of those people, if we're applying these new rules, would never have gotten in. And I'm OK with that," he said.

The sheriff's office is still looking for a Psychologist to join the team. People have until October 19, 2018 to apply. Information and application may be found online.
