AUSTIN, Texas – The ridesharing company Lyft is offering a new way to get around town.

  • Lyft lauching electric scooters
  • Can be accessed in the current Lyft app
  • $1 to unlock, 15 cents per minute

Lyft is launching a fleet of dockless electric scooters in Austin on Tuesday. To celebrate the launch, Lyft has created a pop-up spot for people to come take one of their scooters for a test ride and score some free stuff, including helmets.

“Lyft believes scooters are a powerful and environmentally-friendly last-mile solution in Austin, complementing existing mobility options to help Austinintes get where they are headed and reducing congestion and carbon emissions in the City,” said Mike Kilpatrick, Lyft Bikes & Scooters Austin.

Austin is now the fifth market Lyft has entered with their new scooters. To scoot, riders will have to pay $1 to unlock it and then 15 cents for each minute during a ride.

The scooters can be accessed through the current Lyft app. The pop-up is located at the Lyft Driver Hub at 1021 E 7th Street.

Another scooter company, Bird, currently has 500 scooters in Austin. Over the summer as more and more scooters popped up in the city, leaders are reminding riders to stick to the roads and bike lanes.
