GATESVILLE, Texas -- State and local authorities are still trying to determine what caused a deadly explosion at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville, Texas. Gatesville is located about 45 minutes west of Waco.

The blast occurred in a portion of the hospital that was being constructed for expansion. Officials said the shockwave that followed the blast was tremendous.

Engineers are also assessing damage to neighboring buildings - a nursing home and an assisted living facility. Part of the process involves interviewing victims and witnesses. Anyone who witnessed the blast was encouraged to provide photos and videos.

“We are focusing the investigation on the debris field in and around the explosion site. We will also be assessing damages to the hospital and nursing home facility there, at that location,” Gatesville Police Department Chief Nathan Gohlke said. “[We have] full intent of releasing those unaffected back to the hospital’s control within the very near future.”

Victims suffered blast injuries and burns. Several were transported to facilities in other cities. Police identified the victim who died as 44-year-old Michael Bruggman, of Rogers, Texas. He was working construction at the site.
