AUSTIN, Texas – On April 3, 2016, University of Texas student Haruka Weiser was leaving a dance practice and on her way home when she was brutally murdered.

Only 100 feet away from her dorm, it is believed Weiser was killed by homeless teen Meechaiel Criner. Weiser’s body was discovered three days later in Waller Creek.

An autopsy report determined Weiser was sexually assaulted and strangled. Criner was indicted in 2016 on capital murder charges.

Criner was found with a duffel bag of Weiser’s belongings and captured on surveillance footage in the area around the time she was murdered.

UT police are turning their logo gold for the month of April to honor Weiser. Following her death, the university partnered with the Weiser family to create the Be Safe program called “Walk With Me.”

The program promotes a safe environment on campus for students teaching them to car for each other. Weiser’s family gave her a new name after she died – Bright Faith. UTPD said the gold used in their designs this month will remind the campus community of the “eternal light” that guides us.

Students are encouraged to make sure no one has to walk home alone from classes late at night.

“We are one family. Let’s be there for each other, be kind and #BeSafe,” posted UTPD.

Criner is expected back in court for his trial to begin on June 9.
