AUSTIN, Texas — Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the brutal murder of a University of Texas at Austin freshman.

Later tonight, friends and loved ones will gather to remember Haruka Weiser.

Weiser was walking home from her dance when she was attacked — She was just 100 feet from her dorm. An autopsy report determined she was sexually assaulted and strangled.

Three days later Weiser's body was found near Waller Creek. Homeless teen Meechaiel Criner was arrested in connection with her death. Criner was indicted last June on capital murder charges.

He had a duffel bag full of Wesier's belongings and was caught on surveillance camera in the area around the time of her murder.

UT government will host the ceremony tonight at 8 p.m. at Main Hall.
