AUSTIN, Texas – Thousands of artists are flocking to the HOPE outdoor gallery before the original location is demolished.

The graffiti park has had a plethora of artists leave their stamp on a piece of Austin. To say goodbye before the gallery is moved to Carson Creek Ranch, organizers set up a 'visual open mic' where local artists were invited to come and make creations.

Some spaces were left open for tourists while major parts of the walls were reserved for the local artists. This is the last event of its kind at the gallery before it moves to Southeast Austin.

One artist said public art spaces are vital in a community like Austin.

"To introduce kids to that at a young young age and to be in a place where they can practice and they can see people practice and not get in trouble for it is so amazing and so important," said artist Liza Fishbone.

Organizers said the transition to the new space should begin in June. The new six-acre location will become a permanent home for the gallery offering art classes for youths and adults.

The Carson Creek location will break ground on construction in early 2018 and is expected to be finished by the end of 2018. The owner of the gallery’s current downtown location on Baylor Street has been transferred to a real estate development firm.

According to the HOPE organizers, the new gallery will offer space to expand creations with live art projects and jobs for local artists.

"We are so lucky that this gets to continue on and it’s not just being shut down and it’s going to be out in nature and our pieces are going to ride longer meaning that you’ll be able to paint a piece and it’ll stay on the wall longer," said artist Helena Martin.
