AUSTIN, Texas — 10:45 a.m. update:
Austin police held a press briefing about 10:45 a.m. Monday in order to update the investigation. According to police, a package containing an explosive device was left on the doorstep of the home. The package was picked up by a teen male, who brought that package into the home and opened it in the kitchen.
An explosion occurred in the kitchen, killing the teen, who may have been 17, and injured an adult woman. It's not believed the woman's injuries are life-threatening.
Police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide. The United States Postal Service checked records and determined the package was not delivered by USPS or other services. Police said there are similarities to an incident on March 2 in North Austin that claimed a person's life. Both incidents involved African-American families, and police said a hate crime could not be ruled out.
Police would not elaborate on the similarities between the incidents or disclose what kind of explosive device detonated. Austin police urged people not to open unidentitied packages left at their homes if they are unexpected. Rather, police said, you should call 911.
