ROUND ROCK, Texas — The Round Rock police officer who was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning has been identified.

Officer Charles Whites, a 18-year veteran, remains in serious condition.

The deceased pedestrian, who reportedly attempted to cross I-35 near Old Settlers Boulevard, has been identified as Amir Azad, age 25.

The driver who struck the pedestrian has been identified by police as Raul Ramos Martinez. 

Whites was in the process of directing traffic around the scene when he was also struck by a car near Palm Valley Boulevard at around 6:41 a.m., according to Round Rock Police.

The 65-year-old driver was arrested and charged with intoxication assault, Chief Allen Banks said. 

In addition, Round Rock police said Officer Patrick Turck, Officer John Schultz and a law enforcement support technician Josh Lake were sent to the hospital after lightning struck near them around 10 a.m. while working the scene. All three were were cleared and released not long after.
