ROUND ROCK, Texas — A Round Rock police officer was hit while directing traffic around an accident, and three others were shocked by lightning.

The incident happened a little after 5 a.m. Sunday morning on northbound I-35 near Old Settlers Boulevard.

Police said they received a call about a person walking on the roadway around 5:27 a.m. When officers arrived on scene, the pedestrian was found, deceased.

One officer was in the process of directing traffic around the scene when he was also struck by a car near Palm Valley Boulevard at around 6:41 a.m., according to Round Rock Police.

The 65-year-old driver was arrested and charged with intoxication assault, Chief Allen Banks said. The 18-year veteran of the force was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

In addition, Round Rock police said two other officers and a law enforcement support technician were sent to the hospital after lightning struck near them around 10 a.m. while working the scene. All three were were cleared/released not long after.
