TRAVIS COUNTY – Investigators are working to learn more about a man and a female child found dead in West Travis County on Monday.

The Travis County Sheriffs were called for a welfare check around 5:44 a.m. on Monday at 8000 block of El Dorado Dr. Deputies entered the house after their knocks on the door went unanswered.

“When we receive a check welfare call and we’re not able to get a response to the residence, if there’s something that gives the officer probable cause to believe that someone’s welfare is in jeopardy, they can enter the premise and they did,” said Kristen Dark, the public information officer for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office.

Two bodies were found in the house with gunshot wounds. On Tuesday afternoon, the man was identified as Yariv Kaplan, 42, of Travis county.

The sheriff’s office believes this is an isolated incident and the public is not in danger.

The Travis County Medical Examiner was at the scene and will determine the official cause of manner of death.

Neighbor Ron Wacker has lived in the area since 1977 and said he was shocked to learn this incident happened in the quiet Granada Hills subdivision.

“Overall it’s a very good neighborhood. Very few people are moving out and a lot of people are trying to move in,” he said.

The child attended the Austin Waldorf School, which released the following statement: “A family, our school, and the Austin community have suffered a tragic loss today. We are working with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and following our crisis response protocols to ensure that our school community has what they need to begin processing. There is an ongoing investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and we are unable to comment further at this time. We are respecting the privacy and many unknowns of the situation.”

Margaret Covell lives across the street from the residence.

“I want everyone in our neighborhood to take the time to check on their neighbors,” she said. “Just the take the time, even if you don’t feel really up to it, maybe they need it more than you do.”

Officials are not releasing any more information at this time and could not confirm if there is another shooter.
