BUDA, Texas - There's a long list of propositions on the ballot in Hays County, but perhaps the hot button item in Buda is whether or not the city should put fluoride in the tap water.

Spectrum News was hard-pressed to find anyone in downtown Buda willing to tell us that they're voting "yes" on proposition A, or that they want fluoride in their water.

However, the opposition was quite vocal with many saying that fluoride in tap water can be dangerous.

"It is forbidden to be released into the environment, into the air, into the water by the EPA. Why is this product going to end up in our drinking water? That's my question," said Buda resident Edie Toledo.

But the Texas Department of Health and Human Services said the product isn't toxic, but rather a "practical, cost-effective, equitable, and safe measure."

The Fluoridation Program promotes fluoride saying it, "prevents tooth decay and promotes oral health". According to DHS, every dollar that goes towards fluoridation saves a resident $38 on dental care.

But Buda resident Jennifer Allan said she's come off seven prescription drugs since fluoride was removed from the water three years ago. Allan said she suffers from an autoimmune disease.

"When they took it out of the water in 2015 in November, I suddenly went into remission," said Allen.

The voters will get their chance to sound off on what they think should fill their water tanks, at the polls. Early voting will continue on until Nov. 3 and Election Day is Tuesday Nov. 7.
