HAYS COUNTY, Texas -- Election day is right around the corner and voters in Hays County have a lengthy ballot to read over.

There are 30 propositions to vote on, as well as several candidate races in San Marcos, Kyle and Buda.

"The city of San Marcos has two candidates, The city of Buda has a mayor and three candidates, and the city of Kyle has a mayor and three councilmembers," said elections director Jennifer Anderson.

Anderson said those items are hidden in the middle of the ballot.

"So not going down the ballot, you'll almost surely miss them," said Anderson.

There's a reason why the ballot is so long. Every two years, the Texas Constitution allows cities of more than 5,000 residents to update the verbiage in their charters.

"To make the changes, they would have to go through an election," said Anderson.

That means, you could be voting on minute things like changing the phrase "municipal government" to "city government" in your town's charter. Whether your checking a box to choose your next mayor, or deciding whether you prefer the phrase, 'mayor pro tempore', or 'mayor pro tem', now is the time to give the ballot a good once-over.

"You shouldn't just impulsively choose according to these predilections that you hold. You should do your research fully," said Hays County voter Lauren Saliba.

Early voting continues until next Friday, Nov. 3. Election day is Nov. 7.
