ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- More than 20 Iraqi students are staying with host families in the Rochester area for two weeks as part of a cultural program sponsored through the U.S. State Department.

Hosts say the experience so far has been life-changing, as they work to defy stereotypes and challenge their own prejudices.

“There was a specific time where I had a reaction to two Middle Eastern looking men and I`m ashamed now that I had the thoughts that I thought,” said host Suzanne Strauber.

As part of their stay, the students will participate in a series of learning experiences while touring city landmarks.  As they travel, they hope to serve an even greater purpose as leaders.

“Enable Iraqi and U.S. students to learn more about leadership skills to strengthen the future of Iraq and the U.S,” said Bzhar Abdalqadir, of Iraq.

In the next few days, the students will be taking a trip to the Susan B. Anthony House and also pay a visit to Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren. The entire cohort of students will return to their home country at the end of August.
