Rochester firefighters are working to determine if smoke detectors were working at a fire that hurt one person in the city's Swillburg neighborhood Sunday afternoon.

"Somebody was definitely screaming, 'Fire!' and the other three occupants were able to escape unharmed,” said Deputy Chief David Kaltenbach, Rochester Fire Department.

The person was rushed to the hospital with what the deputy chief said appeared to be critical injuries.

Crews arrived just before 12:30 p.m. to the home on Bloomfield Place, a narrow street in the area of South Goodman Street and Interstate 4-90.

They met flames coming out of the front of the home.

Firefighters had to go in to retrieve the injured victim.

It took 30 minutes to get the fire under control, but we're told there's extensive damage to the first floor.

At this time, there's no word yet on a cause.
