Jessica Andrews of Henrietta has lost three pieces of her family.

“They were going to Cooperstown on a wine tour and never made it,” said Andrews, aunt of Axel and Rich Steenburg.

Her nephews, along with Axel’s wife Amy, were among the 20 people killed in a limousine crash in Schoharie. Axel and Amy were newlyweds.

“We’ve lost a part of our family forever,” she said.

According to Andrews, Axel reserved the limo for his wife Amy’s 30th birthday.

“They made the right choices. They were responsible in that they hired a limousine to take them so they can go and celebrate and they ended up losing their lives being responsible,” she said.

Reports indicate that the limo transporting the group had several violations. Andrews believes the intersection of State Route 30 and State Route 30A where the crash happened could have been a factor too. She drove down that same road three weeks ago.

“We just have to believe that that stretch of road will be heavily looked at and that the changes will be made,” Andrews said. “It’s a treacherous stretch of highway to be traveling on. That stretch of road is just atrocious.”

The crash is the deadliest transportation accident in the United States since 2009. Funeral arrangements for Axel, Amy and Rich Steenburg are scheduled for October 12 in Amsterdam.
