A local sheriff is taking policing to a higher level, combining law enforcement and community relations with social media.

Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Luce is introducing The Sheriff App.

The app will allow his office and others like it to send emergency alerts and other critical information to the community in an instant.

Users will be able to send tips to investigators, even anonymously.

The effort has been a year in the making and Seneca County is one of just a handful of counties in New York State using this app.

"I think that's part of community policing and being open with the public," Sheriff Luce said.

He hopes everyone in the county with a smartphone or device will download the app, which is offered for free in both the Google Play and App stores.
