BROCKPORT, NY.. — The significance of Memorial Day became a learning lesson for students in Brockport Friday.

Nearly 800 students at the Oliver Middle School took part in their annual Memorial Day ceremony.

The students met with local veterans on the school lawn where a flag was presented and raised, honoring  the nation's armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Students were part of a wreath laying ceremony at the flagpole. For the veterans, youth participation in Memorial day is important.

"This is such a great opportunity to remind the kids of what brings us together instead of what divides us," said Maj. Richard Wester, veteran. "Today we live in an era of so much political divisiveness and acrimony it's nice to remind them that you know what? There's more that brings us together than drives us apart. So, the kids get it. The adults get it. And out community is pretty strong in that regard."

The names of area deceased veterans were read as the flag was lowered to half staff and Taps were played.
