ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester community weighed in on whether the name of School No. 12 should change to honor a pretty well known city resident who once lived where the building now stands.

The district is thinking of renaming James P.B. Duffy School after Frederick Douglass. The school board held a public input session on the name change.

School 12 on South Avenue sits where Douglass' home once stood. The home burned down in 1872.

School Board President Van White says some equally good alternatives for names were also presented last night.

"One of the proposals today was to name it after Anna Marie Douglass and her husband or combination of both of those," White said. "I think that's a good idea. Somebody else mentioned calling it a neighborhood school, a community school. The Anna Marie Douglass Community School. So I think there is some conversation that will still take place."

Historian and activist Doctor David Anderson started the campaign to rename the school.

The board is expected to make a decision by next year.
