Many residents in the Village of Clyde, Lyons, Savannah and as far away as Geneva have been forced to leave their overflowing garbage totes out on the street for weeks at a time. These residents all have one common denominator: they’re customers of Feher Rubbish Removal.

“There is lack of customer service and lack of garbage pickup. They tell us we have to put out our garbage on a particular night and then they don’t come for two, three or four days sometimes. Then when people try to call them, they don’t answer the phone,” said Jeff Shields, Village of Clyde chief of police.

Residents in Clyde pay for their trash removal three months in advance and are supposed to see Feher drop by to pick up their trash every Friday. Amy Cole says the last time her trash was picked up was on April 28.

“The pickup truck with the cage on the back drove by. It was empty. I thought maybe they were going to pick up and come back down the road, but they never came back,” said Cole.

“It kind of makes us all look bad. When we want people to drive through our town, we don’t want their last vision of the town being an overflowed garbage tote," added Shields.

On Sunday morning, Code Enforcement Officer Thomas Sawtelle said there were about 30 Feher totes curbside in the Village of Clyde. There is a local law that is meant to keep residents from leaving their garbage totes out for more than 24 hours or else get a citation.

“We haven’t done anything in regard to any of that, in regard to this particular situation right now because we understand the pressure that the residents are under with not having their garbage picked up,” said Sawtelle.

He says the problem has not gotten critical yet, but if the situation continues, the problem will get worse.

“With the weather getting warmer, we’re going to have problems with odors, insects, and vermin getting into the trash and we just don’t want that. That’s unhealthy,” added Sawtelle.

“We did have opossum in the yard the other morning. We’ve had raccoons before, so animals, the wind with the weather blowing the totes over and the garbage going all over—it doesn’t look very pretty with a bunch of garbage out in front of your house,” added Cole.

Residents say that if nothing changes, they plan to switch companies when their three-month term is up with Feher Rubbish Removal.

Town officials have reached out to Feher with no success, but are continuing to work on the issue. They did not immediately return our request for comment.
